FORT CHAMBRAY is a bastioned fort located on high grounds in Gozo overlooking Mgarr harbour and bordering Ghajnsielem. It was built in the 18th Century by the knights of the order of St. John to serve as the new fortified capitol city and replace Cittadella, the capitol of Gozo but this never materialized.
Instead it was first used as refuge by locals who fled there with their live stock to seek shelter during the French invasion in 1798. Under British rule it served as a small military hospital with cemetery and eventually was used as a civilian mental hospital till 1983, when the fort was left derelict.
In early 1990 a development brief was issued by the Maltese authorities to redevelop the entire area yet retaining the historic buildings like the outer bastions, the barracks, the chapel and hospital complex and in 1995 a master plan was approved to construct a mixed use development of residential and commercial properties to be constructed in three phases.
The developers adopted the concept of creating a self-contained “small town” which offered residents a luxury lifestyle with all modern-day luxuries set within a fortified pedestrianised car free environment of historic buildings, large open spaces, paved areas and landscaped gardens. The development incorporated onsite amenities like; A residents pool and gardens, a gymnasium, various restaurants, bars, shops, and a boutique hotel with spa.
Phase one introduced a mix of 74 residential maisonettes and villas surrounded by a large pool with ample deck area as the main focus point, with most of the villas having their own private pool.
Phase two introduced a further 85 units, 64 planned as two-bedroom apartments, and 21 Duplexes with two and three bedroom layouts. Ground floor apartments enjoy generous outside spaces whilst the top floor Duplexes came with their own private roof.
Phase three is last and the largest phase of the development. It comprised the restoration of all the historic buildings and the conversion of the barracks into commercial outlets to include, retail, food, beverage and entertainment, as well as a Boutique hotel with Spa and the last addition of 200 apartments of various sizes and layouts.
