Malta Residence Programme
The Residence Programme (TRP) was launched in Malta in 2014 with the sole purpose of attracting EU, EEA and SWISS nationals to establish residency in Malta and benefit from a special tax status and free travel movement within the Schengen Zone. Applicants are required to make a property investment by holding a qualifying property in Malta which could be purchased or rented within certain thresholds. The programme also required that applicants demonstrate to have a regular and stable financial resources to maintain themselves and their dependants without relying on Malta social assistance and hold a valid health insurance cover. The main benefit of this programme is the favourable 15% flat tax rate applied only on any foreign income remitted to Malta and applicants are not taxed on any other foreign income which is not remitted to Malta
Malta Global Residence Programme (GRP)
The Malta Global Residence Programme was introduced in 2013 as the route to residency in Malta designed for non-EU, EEA, and SWISS nationals making it attractive for investors, retirees, and digital nomads to enjoy a Mediterranean lifestyle while benefiting from Malta’s special tax status and a strategic location in Europe.
Applicants were required to make a property investment with the option to either purchase or rent with minimum property values and demonstrate a stable income and a valid health insurance cover. The resident card holder benefited from a 15% flat tax rate on income remitted to Malta with a minimal annual tax of €15,000 and with no obligation to reside in Malta full time and enjoy visa free travel within the Schengen Zone for up to a 90 day period. Applicants were required to make a property investment with the option to either purchase or rent with minimum property values, and demonstrate a stable income and a valid health insurance cover and were also allowed to include family members and parents in the application. The resident card holder benefited from a 15% flat tax rate on income remitted to Malta with a minimal annual tax of €15,000, and with no obligation to reside in Malta full time and enjoy visa free travel within the Schengen Zone for up to a 90 day period.
