Why Malta

Malta, officially known as the Republic of Malta is an archipelago of 5 islands in the Mediterranean Sea lying 80 km (59 miles) from the southern tip of Sicily; Malta being the largest island and the commercial and administrative centre, Comino the smallest of the trio, has one hotel and is largely uninhabited, Cominotto a rock just off Comino, Filfla a little cay just 5km offshore from Marsamxlokk and Gozo the second largest island which is more rural, characterised by fishing, tourism, crafts, agriculture and ecotourism.

1. Geography

Situated within close proximity of mainland Europe, being a European member offering free movement within Schengen zone.

2. History

Evidence, including 11 Megalithic monuments, suggests people have lived on the island since around 5000BC. St. Paul was shipwrecked on the island in 60 A.D. on his way to Rome bringing Christianity to Malta.

Valletta, Malta’s capital, is often known as the first planned European city, being sketched in 1565 during the order of the Knights of St. John, and later was taken over by Napoleon on his way to Egypt.

Malta survived a Turkish invasion to be colonised by Britain, and later seeking full Independence in 1964 to became an independent country.

3. Climate

Malta’s climate is warm all year round with mild winters. Average daily temperatures of 19’C going down to 10’C at night with 6 hours of daily sunshine.

4. Culture

Malta is rich in a culture influenced by the many Civilisations that have come into contact with the Maltese Islands throughout the centuries, from the Phoenicians to the British including neighbouring Mediterranean countries.

5. Quality of Life

Malta is family orientated with one of the lowest crime rates coupled with excellent education and healthcare services. Being a former British colony Malta adopted English as one of the primary languages spoken throughout the country.

Low living costs and tax rates with no council rates or taxes make Malta one of the most favourable EU country to reside in.

7. Economy

The Maltese economy is deemed to be a strong economy driven mainly by Tourism, Real Estate, Financial Services and Online Gaming.

There are two primary languages spoken in Malta, Maltese and English being the other.
